Dec.15, 2008 is a day of historic significance. On the very day, the "three direct links" across China's Taiwan Strait have finally become a reality. It is dream long cherished by the Chinese compatriots across the strait.
The flights from Beijing and Shanghai to Taipei are downsized by 1,100 km and 1,000 km respectively, saving about one hour and twenty minutes. In addition to the direct air links, a busy prime seaway is going to be established between the 63 ports on the mainland and 11 ports in Taiwan. Direct cross-strait shipping also saves the freight charges. Direct post links are also available on Dec. 15.
One-day life circle takes shape as the direct cross-strait flight and shipping are started, Xu Shiquan, deputy president of the Association for Taiwan Studies, said.
It is generally believed that the realization of these "three direct links" will further expand the welfare of people across the straits and push forward the tourism development between the two sides.
